Alfonso van Worden, the Captain of the Walloon Legion, embarks on a journey of initiation, that will last ten days and will lead to his meeting with numerous characters: two Muslim cousins, a hermit, an inquisitor, a cabalist and his sister, a group of gypsies, a mathematician, skeletons and ghosts, heavenly brides and wandering Jews, demons and dioscuri. They have countless tales to tell, each of which opens to further levels of knowledge, as well as to further levels of storytelling. But, on closer inspection, there’s a single narrator, who pulls all character’s strings, telling about nothing but himself. We know that from a sentence at the beginning of the movie, drawn from the Polish writer Jan Potocki’s novel The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, on wich Agadah (a Cabalistic term which means ‘to tell’) is loosely based.
